Transition Speed Balanced Geometry. SBG. It may sound like a bunch of marketing speak, since it is our first acronym that actually means something. But that couldn’t be farther from what lies beneath those three letters. When I joined the crew at Transition Bikes, I walked into one of Transition’s biggest projects to date. At the time, it was a tangled mash up of technical geometry terms that would quickly turn away even the biggest bike nerds.
Fork offset, front center, trail, and wheel flop, just to name a few. As things ramped up, it became confusing enough to where we internally needed a way to talk about what we were doing, and thus, Speed Balanced Geometry was coined. So you can call it SBG, or just “how Transition bikes ride”, either way it boils down to providing a means of simplifying the technical terms that make our bikes ride the way they do. Our SBG bikes have been out for a a year now, and we thought it was time to show the world how they came to light.

As a rider owned company we obsess about making and riding bikes that make us better riders and allow us to have more fun on the trail. The entirely redesigned GiddyUp trail bike lineup isn’t about just adding a couple new bike industry standards like boost and metric shocks, it’s about taking a holistic approach to creating a bike that changes the way riders connect with their bike. Our new 2018 bikes started with a clean slate and new approach to bike geometry we call SBG (Speed Balanced Geometry) that puts the rider in a more balanced position on the bike which improves traction and control at all speeds. Our main focus with the updates was to maintain the ride feel of each model while simultaneously pressing the enhance button a few times.
In addition to integrating our SBG system on all existing models, we’ve added the Sentinel to our lineup. The Sentinel fit’s nicely between the Scout and Patrol in travel range, and is capable of being used in the same manner of both bikes depending on your preference for travel and wheelsize. The Patrol, Scout, and Smuggler feature increased travel, optimized pedaling performance, additional size options, and ton of new features to create our most capable lineup to date.
A variety of RockShox and Fox fork models featuring SBG offsets will be available for purchase with SBG framesets.
New models will be available Spring of 2017

More power? Check. Better traction? Definitely. Less shifting? Yup. Funky uneven pedal stroke? Not with Wolf Tooth’s PowerTrac Elliptical™ (PTE) chainrings. Our proprietary design means a slightly less ovalized ring with less aggressive timing than competitors’ versions; any change to your pedal stroke is unnoticeable for most riders, but they still provide the power and traction benefits inherent to elliptical chainrings. PowerTrac Elliptical™ rings feature 10% ovality, combined with 112° timing, which is measured after the Top Dead Center (TDC). This means that with PTE rings, the larger-diameter section of the ring engages with the chain at the optimal point on the downstroke, or “Power Zone,” to take advantage of your body’s natural biomechanics.
So while your pedal stroke will feel smooth and natural, you’ll get better traction and acceleration with PTE rings: It’s like having two chainrings in one! But how exactly do they accomplish this? Here’s the simplest way to explain it: Your pedal stroke is biomechanically weakest when your pedals are at the top and bottom of the circle (around 11:00-1:00 and 5:00-7:00 on a clock face), in what we call the “Recovery Zone.” The ovalized shape of PTE rings means has a smaller diameter when the chain engages in this section and will actually function as if you had TWO FEWER teeth – think of it as an instant gear change to an easier ring, say from a 34t ring to a 32t!They work the same way in the Power Zone of your stroke – when your front pedal is between 1:00-5:00 in our clock analogy. Here, where your legs are their most powerful and efficient, the PowerTrac Ellipticals have a larger diameter and function like they have TWO EXTRA teeth, say from a 34t to 36t. In both cases this works because, with the radius of the chainring constantly changing, the torque needed to turn the cranks is constantly changing as well to better match your power output. But how does this help traction? The above features combine to provide a smoother, more efficient pedal rotation. This provides steadier torque on the rear wheel, so you’re less likely to over-pedal in the Power Zone and spin out. It also makes pedaling a bit easier during the Recovery Zone, so you maintain momentum. This “two-chainrings-in-one” effect keeps pedaling smooth and torque constant through each revolution.
We offer PowerTrac Elliptical™ rings in a wide variety of sizes to fit all major brands’ cranks. Just pick your size and configuration, order, install, and start pedaling as normal – your new oval rings will do the rest!

We’re proud to bring you SBG. Speed Balanced Geometry. Years in the works, keep your eyes peeled later this year.
What is it about the human connection to the bicycle that brings us so much joy? How can such a simple mechanical device mean so much to so many of us? What if it was possible to heighten that connection? What would it take, what would it mean and how would you achieve it?
Imagine a dream where you could ride without thinking about what your front wheel is doing. You stopped having conscious thought about whether it had traction or not, instead you just intuitively knew. In this same dream your bike could do exactly what you wanted it to at whatever speed your were moving. At high speeds it carved stable turns with supreme grip, and at slow speeds it was nimble and precise to maneuver tight turns. This was our dream.
In the search for a better handling bike, we started by asking some simple questions. Why are mountain bikes becoming longer and slacker? The obvious answer is stability. Why is this good? It makes the rider feel safer and creates a more stable chassis at higher speeds or steeper terrain. Longer and slacker comes at a cost however, and that cost is realized at slower speeds or flatter terrain where the front wheel is too far ahead of the rider. This inhibits the rider’s ability to properly weight the front wheel. What if it were possible to have a mountain bike that did all of this well?

]]>The new Mach 5.5 Carbon builds on the legacy of our renowned Mach 5.7 Carbon as the quintessential trail bike. With 140mm of dw-link™ rear travel, it sticks to and claws up just about anything, with unparalleled pedaling efficiency. On descents, the Mach 5.5 Carbon’s incredible square edge bump performance and 160mm travel Fox 36 fork enables you to conquer terrain that makes other bikes cower. It’s a bike that inspires you to climb while looking forward to the descents and that begs you to push your limits while putting a smile on your face.
There are several things that make the new Mach 5.5 Carbon truly exceptional. We’ve evolved our mid-travel link design, by utilizing the same rear shock pivot cartridge bearing design found in our longer travel clevis designs (such as the Firebird and Phoenix), to give the Mach 5.5 Carbon the unmatched small bump compliance and traction that Pivot is known for in a lighter weight and more compact design.
When engineering the ultimate trail bike chassis, weight matters. The Mach 5.5 Carbon matches Mach 6 Carbon durability while achieving Mach 429 SL Carbon weights and the perfect balance of frame stiffness and ride feel that Pivot frames are known for. The frame’s carbon structure features our proprietary hollow core internal molding process combined with a highly optimized lay-up design, utilizing lighter weight, high modulus materials that save up to a pound (.45kg) over other trail/enduro bike designs. The Mach 5.5 Carbon is available as a complete bike, with builds weighing under 27lbs (12.2kg) complete with dropper, and with frame weights as low as 5.2lbs(2.35kg).
The geometry of the Mach 5.5 Carbon is tuned to support its well-rounded trail bike personality – the optimized long and low geometry with a 66.5-degree head angle provides high-speed stability, contributing to its amazing descending capabilities. Combined with short 430mm chainstays and relatively steep 73.5-degree seat angle, it absolutely crushes the steepest of climbs. The Mach 5.5 Carbon’s overall balanced geometry makes it the ultimate trail bike weapon.
We’ve taken this ultimate trail bike idea one step further by combining it with Maxxis’ new Wide Trail 2.6” Minion DHF/Rekon tire combination mounted on 35mm wide rims for maximum control and maximum fun in a wide variety of conditions. This wider 2.6” tire option gives you incredible traction and rollover advantages with nearly the speed of a full on enduro race tire set up. The Mach 5.5 Carbon can run any 27.5 tire combination, from 2.1-2.6, so your options are nearly unlimited.
Featured on the Mach 5.5 Carbon is Pivot’s ultra-clean, removable front derailleur mount. For riders that want to run two chainrings, this precisely engineered mount offers the best shifting performance you can get, utilizing Shimano’s new side-swing front derailleur system. For those who love the simple functionality of 1x systems, the removable front derailleur mount offers an incredibly sleek, clean installation with almost no evidence of the un-needed hardware.
The Mach 5.5 Carbon offers full Di2 electronic integration and easy, clean internal routing of shifters, brakes and droppers via the Pivot Cable Port system.
Other essential details include ultra-quiet, low durometer, rubberized frame protection in all the key places, 180mm rear post mount disc brake, and Enduro Max cartridge bearings throughout.
The Mach 5.5 Carbon is available in five sizes to fit riders from 4’11” to 6’7”+ from XS to XL. Every size clears a full size water bottle inside the front triangle.
